Rise of the Phoenix is a documentary-in-progress about women in modern China. I had the opportunity to edit this 9-minute demo for director May May Tchao.
In industrialized China today, the liberation of women is as necessary as it is inevitable, yet the tradition of a sexist culture is still deeply embedded. In Rise of the Phoenix, the changing roles and status of Chinese women is explored against the backdrop of China’s rapid economic transformation. The film tells the compelling narratives of four women – each from different social and economic backgrounds – all struggling with difficult choices and decisions that shaped their destinies. Through their voices and stories, the film offers a new look at feminism and gender equality that recognizes women not as liabilities but as essential assets for the future of a nation.
